How to Choose a Storage Facility That Actually Fits Your Needs

Josh Summerhays • September 17, 2026

Choosing a storage facility gets easier once you stop comparing properties as though they're all interchangeable. The right choice depends on what you're storing, how frequently you'll need it, how you plan to move it in, and which facility features matter for those belongings. Affordable Family Storage operates facilities in multiple U.S. markets, and the options aren't identical at every property. Before settling on a unit, it's worth comparing the storage options in your city and then looking closely at the details for the location you're considering.

Start With What You're Storing

Make an inventory before comparing units. You don't need a detailed spreadsheet, but you should know which large items are going in, roughly how many boxes you'll have, and whether you'll need to retrieve anything regularly. That information determines more than unit size. Wooden furniture, documents, electronics, and other temperature-sensitive belongings may point you toward climate-controlled space. A household move might put more emphasis on unit dimensions and loading access. Business inventory that you'll retrieve throughout the month makes access hours more important. If you're still figuring out what you need, our self storage FAQ covers common questions about sizes, climate control, security, rental periods, and restricted items.

Choose the Unit Type Before the Unit Size

Square footage matters, but two similarly sized units can work very differently. At our Lafayette, Indiana property on South Street, for example, we offer climate-controlled units as well as drive-up units. The facility also accommodates cars and RVs. At our Muncie property on West Bethel Avenue, the available spaces include ground-floor, climate-controlled units.

Those differences affect moving day. If you're bringing in heavy furniture, a ground-floor or drive-up space may matter as much as the dimensions themselves. If the belongings are sensitive to temperature or humidity, climate control deserves more attention than the shortest route from your vehicle to the unit. Check the individual location page rather than assuming an amenity available at one Affordable Family Storage property is offered everywhere.

Decide Whether You Need Climate Control

Climate control isn't necessary for every load, so consider the materials you're storing. Our climate-controlled spaces are intended for belongings sensitive to temperature and humidity. Consider electronics, wooden furniture, and documents as items suited for these units.

Availability also differs by property. All units at our Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway location in Des Moines are climate-controlled, for example. Our Derby, Kansas location has climate-controlled space alongside standard units and units with power. So the useful question isn't simply, "Does this company offer climate control?" It's whether the particular facility and unit you're considering have it.

Look Closely at Access

A facility's address might work well for you, but access hours still need to fit your routine. Several of our properties, including Lafayette, Muncie Bethel Avenue, Urbandale, Sugar Land, and Des Moines, have tenant access from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day. That's worth checking before you rent, particularly if you'll be retrieving business inventory, seasonal equipment, or household belongings outside normal office hours.

Access hours and office hours aren't the same thing. At our Lafayette property, for instance, tenants have daily access from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., while the office follows a separate Tuesday through Saturday schedule. Location matters here too. Our Lafayette facility is at 3833 South Street, while our Sugar Land facility is at 15500 Voss Road. Instead of choosing based only on the city name, look at the actual road and think about where you're usually coming from when you'll need the unit.

Check How You'll Load and Unload

Picture the largest thing you're storing and how you'll get it from your vehicle into the unit. Drive-up access lets you bring a vehicle directly to the unit door. Indoor storage involves a different loading process, even when the unit is on the ground floor. Neither arrangement is automatically better. It depends on the belongings you're moving and how much you value direct vehicle access versus an interior space.

Our Lafayette property has drive-up units, while our Muncie Bethel Avenue facility has ground-floor climate-controlled units without stairs or elevators. Those are meaningful distinctions if you're moving furniture, appliances, or a large number of boxes. Before renting, check the unit type rather than relying on the size alone.

Don't Assume Every Facility Handles Vehicles the Same Way

If you need vehicle storage, check the specific location and the type of space offered. Our Sugar Land property has parking for cars, boats, RVs, and trailers. We cover parking and open spaces in 12x30, 12x60, and 12x80 dimensions. Lafayette also has storage for cars and RVs. That's a good example of why browsing by brand alone isn't enough. A property that works well for household boxes isn't automatically equipped for a trailer or RV.

Check for Specialized Storage Needs

Most renters are looking for standard or climate-controlled space, but some storage needs fall outside those categories. At Sugar Land, we offer freezer and cooler storage for refrigerated or frozen goods, and these units also have a generator backup. That makes the property fundamentally different from a standard household storage location. The same principle applies even if you don't need refrigerated space. Start with the item you're trying to store, then confirm that the specific property supports it. Don't assume every location within a multi-location company has the same unit types.

Understand Pricing and Rental Terms Before Signing

The advertised monthly rate isn't the only number worth checking. Ask about move-in fees, billing terms, current promotions, insurance requirements, and how much notice is required when you leave. Our Muncie Bethel Avenue location, for example, has a one-time $25 move-in fee, month-to-month rentals, and a 20-day move-out notice. Sugar Land also has a one-time $25 move-in fee. Check the current terms for the property and unit you intend to rent rather than applying those details to every location.

Think About How You'll Use the Unit After Move-In

Packing isn't finished once everything fits through the door. If you'll return to the unit, leave yourself a way to reach what you need. Frequently used belongings belong closer to the entrance, while items you expect to leave untouched can go farther back. Clear labels and a simple inventory also reduce the need to open boxes later. Our guide to practical self storage tips covers unit layout, pathways, labeling, and keeping track of stored belongings in more detail. This is worth considering before choosing a size. A unit that technically holds everything may not be large enough for the way you want to use it if you also need a walkway and regular access to boxes near the back.

Compare the Facility, Not Just the Price

Price matters, but a lower rate loses some of its value if the unit type doesn't suit your belongings or the property doesn't work with the way you'll use it. Compare the actual unit first: size, climate control, indoor versus drive-up access, and any specialized requirements. Then check the property itself, including its address, tenant access hours, security features, office schedule, and rental terms. Affordable Family Storage locations differ in meaningful ways, from ground-floor climate-controlled units in Muncie to vehicle parking and refrigerated storage in Sugar Land. Taking a few minutes to compare those details gives you a much clearer basis for choosing a unit.

Find the Facility That Matches What You're Storing

A good storage choice starts with a practical match between your belongings and the property. Know what you're storing, decide which unit features matter, and confirm the details on the individual location page before renting. Because amenities and unit types vary among our properties, you can explore storage options from Affordable Family Storage to find the relevant location and review its current offerings. From there, compare the unit itself, access details, and rental terms against what you actually need.
