A Better Way to Handle College Storage: Affordable Family Storage for Ball State Students

Josh Summerhays • October 26, 2026

College housing changes quickly. One semester you're settled into a residence hall or apartment, and a few months later you're packing everything into boxes, arranging transportation, and deciding where your belongings will go until the next move. For Ball State University students, keeping furniture and school supplies in Muncie may be more practical than transporting everything home between housing arrangements. At Affordable Family Storage, our Hoyt Avenue location offers storage options in Muncie for students who need space during summer break, apartment transitions, or the academic year.

Our property at 1920 S Hoyt Avenue provides indoor climate-controlled units, month-to-month rentals, and daily access from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. These features help students manage changing class schedules and move-in dates.

Why Ball State Students Need Storage Between Semesters

Student storage needs tend to follow the academic calendar. At the end of the spring semester, residence hall students must remove their belongings and complete the university's checkout process. Students moving between off-campus apartments may face similar challenges if their leases don't begin and end on the same day. According to Ball State University's end-of-year move-out information, residence halls close for the 2026-2027 academic year on May 1, 2027, at 9:00 a.m. Students must generally check out by that deadline or within 24 hours after their last final exam, whichever comes first. Graduating seniors have a separate deadline.

That means storage arrangements should be made before finals week becomes crowded with packing and other responsibilities. Students who already know they'll return to Muncie in the fall can decide what should remain locally instead of transporting everything twice.

Climate-Controlled Storage for College Belongings

Our Hoyt Avenue facility offers indoor climate-controlled storage, which is particularly useful for the kinds of belongings students accumulate during college. Electronics, books, paperwork, and certain furniture materials are sensitive to prolonged temperature and moisture exposure. Keeping them in a more consistent indoor environment reduces exposure to those fluctuations while they're not in use.

For students storing computers or gaming equipment, proper preparation still matters. Disconnect cables, remove batteries when appropriate, and pack screens in protective materials. Avoid placing heavy boxes on top of delicate equipment. Furniture should be clean and dry before entering storage. Our guide to storing furniture in a storage unit covers preparation for different materials and furniture types.

Flexible Rentals for Changing Student Schedules

A student who needs storage from May through August has different requirements from someone who needs extra space throughout the academic year. At our Hoyt Avenue property, rentals are month-to-month. There is no long-term minimum lease, so students can choose a rental period that fits their housing arrangements without committing to an entire academic year.

Students should still plan around the move-out policy. We require 20 days' notice before vacating, and rentals are not prorated for an unused portion of the final billing period. For a summer rental, it makes sense to consider the anticipated return date before choosing when to end the lease. If your new apartment won't be available immediately, allowing enough time to retrieve your belongings can prevent another last-minute move.

Different Unit Sizes for Different College Storage Needs

Students don't all need the same amount of space. Someone storing bedding, books, and a few containers may need a smaller unit than a student moving out of a furnished apartment with personal furniture. Our Hoyt Avenue facility offers different unit sizes and layouts. The right choice depends on the actual volume of belongings and how much access you'll need during the rental.

A 5x5 unit provides 25 square feet of floor space and is a useful reference point for boxes and smaller belongings. A 5x10 offers 50 square feet and may accommodate a mattress, desk, chair, and packed containers, depending on their dimensions. Students with larger furniture collections should measure their belongings before selecting a unit. The dimensions of the unit door and the loading route matter, too.

What Makes Our Hoyt Avenue Location Practical?

Our property is located at 1920 S Hoyt Avenue in Muncie. Students can keep belongings in the same city where they attend school rather than arranging transportation to a distant storage location. The facility offers tenant access seven days a week, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. That gives renters time to retrieve belongings around classes, work, and other commitments. Our office is staffed Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students who need in-person assistance should plan visits during those hours.

The building contains indoor units on multiple floors, including basement, ground-floor, second-floor, and third-floor options. When selecting a unit, check its floor and loading route, particularly if you're moving a mattress or large furniture. We also offer online bill payment, which is useful for students who return home during summer but continue renting their unit in Muncie.

Storage for Summer Break and Apartment Moves

Summer storage is one of the clearest reasons to rent during college. Students returning home may have furniture, bedding, or household supplies they won't need until the next semester. Keeping those belongings in Muncie can reduce the amount of packing required for the return trip. It also helps students avoid moving bulky furniture home for a few months only to bring it back again.

Storage can serve a different purpose during an apartment transition. If your current lease ends before your new one begins, a short-term unit provides a place for belongings while you wait for the next property to become available. The most useful approach is to pack according to when you'll need each item again. Keep travel necessities separate and group everything intended for the next apartment together.

How to Keep Student Storage Affordable

The lowest advertised monthly rate isn't the only cost worth considering. Students should also account for unit size, transportation, packing supplies, and move-in fees. Our Hoyt Avenue location has a one-time $25 move-in fee. We also advertise a first-month-free offer, though students should check the terms and current eligibility before budgeting around it.

Sharing a unit with a roommate may reduce individual costs, but both students should agree on payment responsibilities, access arrangements, and who will be listed on the rental agreement. If several people plan to use one space, label containers by owner and establish a retrieval plan before moving everything inside.

Preparing for Your Next Semester at Ball State

Student storage works best when it's arranged before moving becomes urgent. Make an inventory, measure larger furniture, and check your housing deadlines before deciding how much space to rent. At Affordable Family Storage, our Hoyt Avenue location provides indoor climate-controlled space with flexible rental terms for students staying connected to Muncie.
