5 Bizarre Things Found in Storage Units

Storage units are used to keep a wide variety of items. While most units are used to store extra furniture, clothing, and supplies that people just don’t have room for in their current living situation, some people get a bit more creative. In today’s Affordable Family Storage blog, we will take a look at some of the most interesting items people have found in storage units over the years.

Old Space Equipment

Even NASA needs some extra storage space! On the Spike TV show Auction Hunters, one of the teams purchased an abandoned storage unit near Cape Canaveral in Florida and found an exciting surprise inside. Tucked in the storage unit was a countdown clock and rocket which were left over from an old project. The duo quickly contacted an expert to verify the authenticity of the items and then sold the pieces to a collector.

Thousands of Dollars

When people buy abandoned storage units, they usually expect some junk and the occasional semi-valuable item. They definitely don’t expect to find a bunch of money inside! A man from San Jose purchased a storage unit at an auction only to discover a plastic storage container filled with gold and silver ingots, along with rare coins. All in all, the collection was worth more than half a million dollars.

Famous Cars

People have found a number of different cars and other vehicles from movies and tv shows throughout the years. Some of the coolest vehicles include the Lotus submarine car used in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me (purchased for almost $1 million at an auction in 2013) and K.I.T.T., the car from the tv show Knight Rider.

Unreleased Michael Jackson Music

To be quite honest, this would have been one of the most exciting things to find in a storage unit -- besides the container full of rare coins and metals, of course. Over 250 unreleased Michael Jackson songs were found in a storage unit owned by his father. The songs were recorded while the King of Pop was between contracts, so no record company could lay claim to them.

Burt Reynolds’ History

Burt Reynolds kept a lot of memorabilia from the projects he worked on over the years and kept them all in a storage unit. Unfortunately, he didn’t keep up with the payments and the unit went up for auction. Some of the items included the canoe from Deliverance, a horse carriage built by Dolly Parton, and a number of letters and photos from friends and co-stars. The items can now be viewed in a museum in Florida.
