Antique mirror in a storage unit

When you are packing up your belongings and moving them into a storage unit, it’s important that you handle some items with extra care, especially glass, mirrors, and other fragile items. Using the right packing methods when moving a mirror ensures that you will not find it broken when you take it out of storage. Let’s face it, no one wants seven years of bad luck.

To help you out with your move, Affordable Family Storage in Omaha provides some tips for moving a mirror.

Packing

When you are packing a mirror for your storage unit, take your time. Rushing through the job will only lead to problems in the future. To get started, place painter’s tape on the surface of the glass in a star pattern to help absorb any shocks and prevent cracking. Next, take foam, bubble wrap, or cardboard and cover the corners of the mirror, securing them with packing tape. Afterward, wrap the entire mirror in bubble wrap and secure it with tape.

Smaller mirrors should be packed in a similar fashion, but you should also place them in a box with packing peanuts. If the mirror is shaped irregularly and cannot be packed with bubble wrap, simply place it in a box with as much cushion as possible.

Moving

Labeling is one of the most important parts of the moving process. To remind the movers or your helpers that they are moving a fragile item, remember to write “fragile” across the wrapped mirror or box in big bold lettering. On the way to your storage unit, place the mirror in the back of your moving truck and make sure it’s secure.

Storing

When you put a mirror in a storage unit, there are a few different things to keep in mind. First, never place a heavy item on top of a mirror. Any weight on top of the mirror can cause stress and fractures. Instead, you should always store a mirror in an upright position and secure it with boxes to ensure it will not fall. Additionally, you should keep a mirror away from walkways or any area where there might be foot traffic. Placing the mirror against a wall is generally the safest option.
