Common Storage Space Issues and How to Resolve Them

Renting a storage space may seem like simple business. And for the most part, it is. Many storage newbies, however, will be susceptible to some common mistakes that can have consequences for the quality of their stored items.

Everyone can’t be expected to be a storage expert, so in today’s entry of the Affordable Family Storage blog, we’ll take a look at some common mistakes people make with their storage spaces and provide some tips to resolve them easily.

Cheap Containers

A few issues arise when newcomers begin loading their storage space.

The first issue is often with the containers they use. Cardboard boxes are by far the most commonly used storage containers. They are easy to acquire, they’re relatively cheap, and you can easily label them with markers. The problem with cardboard, though, is that it isn’t very sturdy. When people stack cardboard boxes too high, the boxes will break down over time, causing the stack to lean and potentially fall.

Don’t fall for their convenience - cardboard boxes are not a reliable storage solution if you plan to store your items for a long period of time. Choose sturdier containers, like bankers boxes or plastic totes. Don’t stack boxes above head-height, and remember to label them for easy identification later.

Improper Wrapping

Some larger items like dressers and tables benefit from being wrapped. How you choose to wrap them, however, can make all the difference. Because wooden items tend to hold a small amount of moisture, wrapping them tightly in plastic will trap that moisture, which increases the risk for mold and mildew growth.

Avoid this issue by gently wrapping these items in a breathable cloth material like cotton, then wrapping as necessary with plastic. Other items will benefit from being wrapped in acid-free paper, which is best for long-term storage because it will not damage items over time.

Not Enough Storage Space

Many first-timers will underestimate the amount of storage space they need. For instance, just because you can squeeze your dresser, bed frame, and 10 boxes into a small unit does not mean that you should. In fact, how you arrange a storage space can make all the difference when you need to find one item in one box.
